What to look for in piano teachers

Qualifications

The teacher must have a piano performance or piano teaching diploma from a recognised institution. Also acceptable is a degree in which piano playing or piano pedagogy forms the major part.

Experience

The teacher must possess relevant performing and teaching experience. He or she must have played at a high level.

Qualities

The teacher must be able to transmit a real passion for music and instil good habits for practising, note reading, and listening. He/she must place importance on developing a solid foundational technique.

Adaptability

The teacher must listen to any students’ concerns and adapt his/her teaching style to suit the student’s interests and learning curve.
